Who is Neeraj Chopra?

Subedar Neeraj Chopra is an Indian track and field athlete who has reigned as the world champion and Olympic champion in men’s javelin throw. Neeraj Chopra has made India proud by becoming the first Asian athlete to win a gold medal at the Olympics in the javelin, and the first Asian to win a gold in his event at the World Championship. Chopra has achieved a world U20 record throw of 86.48 m, becoming the first Indian athlete to set the world record. Neeraj Chopra is also a junior commissioned officer in the Indian Army.

Early Life

Neeraj Chopra was born in the Ror family in the small village of Khandra in Panipat, Haryana. His family had been involved in agriculture. He graduated from the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic (DAV) college in Chandigarh. In 2021, he pursued a Bachelor of Arts from the Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab. Neeraj would be teased by the local children for his childhood obesity, following which his father got him enrolled at a gymnasium at Madlauda and later in Panipat. He would play at the Sivaji stadium Panipat, where he first saw javelin throwers and began practicing it himself. 

Career 

Neeraj Chopra succeeded in impressing the South Asian Games with his performance, following which the Indian Army offered him a direct appointment as a Junior Commissioner Officer (JCO) in the Rajputana Files. He accepted the offer and joined as the Naib Subedar. Chopra later made a visit to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) where he practiced alongside javelin thrower  Akshay Choudhary. Upon observation of his performance and skills, Neeraj Chopra became his first coach. Chopra got trained in the same and later won a bronze medal in the district championship. He was later admitted to the Tau Devi Lal Sports Complex in Panchkula to develop his athletic abilities. There, he along with his coach would copy the style of Czech champion Jan Zelenzny. Chopra later participated in the National Junior Athletic Championship in Lucknow in 2012 and won gold with a national record throw of 68.40 meters. He entered his first international championship at the World Youth Championships in Ukraine and won his first international medal at the Youth Olympics Qualification in Bangkok in the year 2014.

Neeraj Chopra studied at the BVN Public School and graduated from the Dayanand Anglo-Vedic College in Chandigarh. He pursued a Bachelor of Arts from the Lovely Professional University in Jalandhar, Punjab.
