Early Life
Gopala Ratnam Subramaniam, commonly known as Mani Ratnam, was born in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India, on June 2, 1956. He had a keen interest in literature and film growing up in a family that spoke Tamil. His uncle, S. Balachander, was a well-known film director in Tamil cinema, and his father, S. Gopala Ratnam, worked as a distributor of motion pictures.
Education
Mani Ratnam completed his schooling at the Besant Theosophical School in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. He then went on to complete his undergraduate degree in commerce from Mission Vivekananda College. Later on, Mani did an MBA in finance from the Jamnalal Bajaj Institute of Management Studies at the University of Mumbai.
Career
With the Kannada movie “Pallavi Anu Pallavi” (1983), Mani Ratnam made his screenwriting debut in the movie business. He made his directing debut with the 1985 Tamil film “Pagal Nilavu,” but it wasn’t until 1986’s critically and financially successful “Mouna Ragam” that he began to acquire wider attention.
Mani Ratnam has won many awards for many of his films; some even got an official entry from India to the Oscars. Mani Ratnam’s current film is Ponniyin Selvan 2, which stars Aishwarya Rai Bachchan like big stars.
