Christopher Nolan To Take A Break From Films, The Odyssey Director Says ‘I Hit The Limits Of…’

After spending years bringing The Odyssey to the big screen, Christopher Nolan is ready to slow down. The Oscar-winning filmmaker has revealed that he plans to take a break from directing after completing the ambitious epic, saying the demanding shoot pushed both him and his team to their limits.

In a recent interview with Today, Christopher Nolan spoke about the physical challenge of making The Odyssey. The director said the scale of the film was unlike anything he had experienced before and admitted that everyone involved was stretched to the limit. He also shared that he plans to take at least a three-year break before returning to another film.

Talking about the intense production, Nolan said, “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody's stamina, I think.”

Even after such a difficult shoot, the filmmaker believes the effort was worth it because of the story's importance. He added, “I mean, it's The Odyssey, of course it should be difficult. We're not doing the job right, making a film of The Odyssey if it doesn't seem difficult."

Apart from its massive scale, The Odyssey also made history in filmmaking. It is the first commercial feature to be shot entirely using IMAX cameras.

Unlike regular cameras, IMAX cameras are much larger, heavier and more difficult to handle. Because of this, Christopher Nolan and his crew had to develop new filming techniques to capture every scene without compromising his vision.

Speaking about the decision, Nolan said he told the IMAX team that if there was ever a film that deserved to be shot completely in IMAX, it was The Odyssey.

Inspired by Homer's classic Greek epic, The Odyssey tells the story of King Odysseus and his long, 10-year journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Matt Damon plays Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway stars as Penelope. Tom Holland appears as their son, Telemachus.

The film also features Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Lupita Nyong'o in the dual roles of Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.

Released in theatres on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey runs for nearly three hours. Ahead of its release, Christopher Nolan visited Mumbai with Matt Damon, Tom Holland and producer Emma Thomas for a grand premiere during their two-day trip to India.
