Communication among friends and social groups online has become so much more convenient with the help of emojis. These small symbols help a user express an emotion or a feeling without having to express it in words. July 17 is observed as the World Emoji Day. In a witty and humorous post, Actress Kajol Devgan took to her Instagram to share the day with her fans.

The World Emoji Day, observed on July 17, was first founded by Jeremy Burge in 2014. Jeremy was the one to discover Emojipedia, a fundamental component in digital communication which is a resource of a wide range of emoticons. July 17 is also the date that shows the calendar emoji of the iOS keypads. The use of emojis today has expanded the range of expression in daily communication.

The very first emojis introduced were text-based emoticons, like ‘:)’ and ‘:(‘. The start of these emoticons began in the 1980s. It was then in 1999 when a Japanese designer Shigetaka Kurita designed emojis for mobile optimization in operator NTT DoCoMo which eventually led to the whole world adopting them. Much ahead in 2011, Apple introduced the iOS 6 keyboard with its own set of emoticons, popularizing their worldwide use.

Every year, on World Emoji Day, almost all major tech companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Google introduce a new set of emojis and updates on existing emojis. A bit of trivia, the emoji with the face of tears of joy, was the first emoticon or a pictograph to be named the Oxford Dictionaries’ Word of the Year in 2015, also becoming the most famously used emoji of all time. Ever since 2015, half of almost all comments on a post online comprise only emoji reactions.
