Swara Bhasker’s Husband Fahad Ahmad Criticises Maharashtra Govt: ‘Gareeb Ke Pet Pe Laat…’

Fahad Ahmad has sparked a fresh debate after criticising the Maharashtra government’s decision to make Marathi language proficiency mandatory for auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers. The move, which will come into effect from May 1, 2026, has already created strong reactions, and Fahad has now voiced concern over how it could impact poor and migrant drivers.

Fahad Ahmad, who is actress Swara Bhasker’s husband and an NCP-linked activist, said that while Marathi is a beautiful language, it should not be forced on people. His remarks have quickly gone viral, especially as discussions around the new rule continue to grow across the state.

Speaking about the issue, Fahad Ahmad said to IANS, "I had told you earlier that Mumbai is a beautiful city of a very beautiful Maharashtra. This city is based on the idea of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj." He further added, "Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj always talked about taking everyone along with him."

He strongly criticised the impact of the rule on daily wage earners. He said, "Marathi is a very beautiful language. But if someone does not know Marathi, then you are stealing food from their children's plates. If their mother is sick and they do not have money to treat her." He further added, "Aaplog gareeb ke pet pe laat kyu maar rahe hain."

Fahad Ahmad also questioned how the rule will be implemented, pointing out that areas like BKC do not primarily operate in Marathi. While he agreed that learning the language is important, he said the government should focus on teaching rather than forcing it.

He suggested, "Sarkar ke pas bhot sare enforces hain, laga dein classes." He proposed that the government could arrange short daily classes for drivers and even compensate them for their time. He added, "Jo vyakti bhukha soyega wo Marathi se pyar kar payega," stressing that people will only embrace the language when they feel supported.

The Maharashtra government has announced that from May 1, 2026, all licensed auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers must have basic knowledge of Marathi. They will need to show that they can read, write, and speak the language.

A verification drive will be conducted across 59 regional and sub-regional transport offices. Drivers may be tested on reading signboards or writing simple sentences. Those who fail to meet the requirement could face strict action, including cancellation of their licenses.

The decision has also faced opposition from driver unions. Groups like the Mumbai Autorickshawmen’s Union have raised concerns about job security, especially for migrant drivers. Some unions have even planned protests, calling the rule unfair.
