OPINION: Alia Bhatt Can Act, But Action Just Isn’t Her Genre

Alia Bhatt has spent more than a decade proving herself in Bollywood. From ro mantic dramas to emotional stories, she has consistently chosen roles that play to her strengths. But when it comes to action, things haven't clicked in quite the same way.

After Heart of Stone, Jigra and now the glimpses of Alpha, it's becoming harder to ignore that action just doesn't seem to be where Alia Bhatt is at her best. The problem isn't her acting ability. It's more about whether she naturally fits the larger-than-life image that action films demand.

Action stars are remembered not just for throwing punches, but for the attitude they bring to the screen. There is a certain swagger, confidence and physical presence that makes audiences believe they can take on ten people at once.

With Alia Bhatt, that larger-than-life aura has always been missing. Her screen image has been built around relatable characters and emotional performances. That's why, even when she's holding a gun or performing stunts, it often feels like an actress playing an action hero rather than an action hero taking over the screen.

That was evident in Heart of Stone and later in Jigra. The emotional scenes stayed with you, but the action portions didn't leave the same impact.

The teaser and trailer of Alpha have given fans a look at Alia Bhatt in full spy mode. There are rigorous combate and weapon-based action scenes. On paper, it has all the ingredients of a big action entertainer. Yet, something still feels missing.

Despite the scale and production value, Alia Bhatt doesn't completely disappear into the role. Her body language, expressions and dialogue delivery don't quite carry the effortless cool that one associates with an action star. In many moments, she looks more suited to a thriller or drama than a high-octane spy franchise.

Compared to stars like Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra who naturally command action films, Alia Bhatt still comes across as a work in progress.

What's interesting is that whenever her films slow down and focus on emotions, Alia Bhatt instantly becomes more convincing. That's exactly what happened in Jigra. The sibling bond and emotional moments had far more impact than the action sequences.

The same pattern has repeated itself throughout her career. Whether it was Raazi, Highway, Gangubai Kathiawadi or Dear Zindagi, she looked completely at home because those films allowed her to rely on emotions rather than aggression.

Perhaps that's where her biggest strength lies.

There seems to be a growing belief in Bollywood that every major actor needs to enter the action space. But that's not necessarily true. Not every successful actor needs to carry machine guns, deliver punchlines and perform gravity-defying stunts.

Some actors shine in comedy. Some dominate romance. Others excel in intense dramas.

Alia Bhatt's strengths have always been rooted in emotional storytelling. Trying too hard to fit into the action mold risks taking away the qualities that made her popular in the first place.

Experimenting with genres is always a good thing. But based on what we've seen so far, action remains the one area where Alia Bhatt looks more miscast than convincing.

That doesn't mean she can't improve or surprise everyone in the future. But right now, the more she moves towards action, the more it feels like she's moving away from the kind of roles that truly suit her.

Sometimes, playing to your strengths is the smartest move. And for Alia Bhatt, those strengths still seem to lie far away from explosions, bike chases and machine guns.
