Border 2 First Review OUT: This Film Critic Calls Sunny Deol “Unstoppable”, Gives 4.5 Stars to the film

Sunny Deol’s much-awaited war drama Border 2 has finally hit theatres today, January 23. Just hours before its release, the film’s first official review surfaced online, and it is overwhelmingly positive. 

Trade expert and film critic Taran Adarsh shared his detailed review on X (formerly Twitter) shortly after midnight, awarding the film an impressive 4.5-star rating. He praised the Anurag Singh directorial for its emotional depth, grand scale, and patriotic spirit.

Sharing his verdict, Taran Adarsh wrote, “Border 2 makes your heart swell with pride… The film salutes the nation as well as the armed forces… STRONGLY RECOMMENDED.” 

He described the film as a “thunderous, emotionally charged war epic” that honours the legacy of JP Dutta’s 1997 classic Border, while standing firmly on its own strength.

According to the review, the film successfully balances spectacle with sentiment, staying true to the spirit of the 1971 Indo-Pak war without turning hollow or excessive.

Taran highlighted the war scenes as one of the film’s strongest elements. He called them “breathtaking”, adding that the action never feels empty or disconnected. Instead, the sequences are deeply rooted in character emotions and storytelling, enhancing the impact rather than overpowering it.

The review reserved special praise for dialogues and music, calling them major highlights. “Dialogues are sharp, hard-hitting, and patriotic without being jingoistic,” Taran noted. He added that several punchlines are designed for big-screen impact and are likely to trigger whistles and applause across theatres. 

The music also received high praise, especially the recreated versions of two iconic songs from the original film, Ghar Kab Aaoge and Jaate Hue Lamhon. According to the critic, both tracks evoke strong emotional responses and add depth to the narrative.

Calling Sunny Deol the soul of the film, Taran Adarsh wrote, “Sunny Deol is the film’s beating heart… This is vintage Sunny Deol—commanding, righteous, and unforgettable.” 

He added that every time Sunny delivers his power-packed dialogues, the theatre is bound to erupt. 

Varun Dhawan also earned special mention for delivering what the critic described as a surprising and intense performance. “He brings vulnerability, fire, and emotional weight to his role,” Taran wrote, crediting strong writing for allowing Varun to shine.

The supporting cast did not go unnoticed. Diljit Dosanjh was described as “a sheer delight to watch in every sequence”, while Ahan Shetty was praised for holding his own alongside seasoned actors.

Border 2 is a sequel to JP Dutta’s iconic 1997 blockbuster Border. Directed by Anurag Singh, the film stars Sunny Deol, Varun Dhawan, Diljit Dosanjh, and Ahan Shetty in lead roles. The war drama is produced by Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, J.P. Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta and has been strategically released ahead of Republic Day, hitting theatres on January 23.

With strong early reviews and patriotic appeal, Border 2 is expected to draw large audiences over the long weekend.
