Kusal Mendis

Kusal Mendis is a professional Sri Lankan cricketer who plays in all forms of the game and a former ODI captain of the national team. He only played sixteen first-class matches before playing for the national side. In November 2017, he was named the One Day International (ODI) batsman of the year for the 2016–17 season at Sri Lanka Cricket’s annual awards. He has been an integral part of the Sri Lankan Team, Kusal is also a wicketkeeper. Recently, he became the batter with most Ducks in ODI Cricket. 

Kusal Mendis was born on 2nd February 1995 to parents Dinesh Mendis and Maheiskha Shivanthi in Moratuwa, Sri Lanka. During his early life, Kusal faced financial problems as his father was a auto-rickshaw driver. 

Kusal Mendis rose through the ranks of Sri Lankan cricket with exceptional performances at the school and youth levels. He made his international debut in 2015 against the West Indies, quickly earning a reputation for his elegant stroke play and composure under pressure. Mendis’ breakthrough came during Sri Lanka’s historic Test victory against Australia in 2016 at Pallekele, where he scored a brilliant 176, anchoring the team to one of its most memorable wins. Over the years, he became a vital part of Sri Lanka’s batting lineup across formats, known for his ability to build innings and handle both spin and pace with finesse.

Throughout his career, Mendis has experienced both remarkable highs and challenging lows. He has registered several match-winning knocks, including crucial centuries against strong sides like India, Bangladesh, and West Indies, establishing himself as a dependable top-order batter. Despite occasional inconsistencies and dips in form, he has remained a central figure in Sri Lanka’s batting unit, often taking on the role of stabiliser during transitions in the national team. Apart from Tests, Mendis has also contributed significantly in ODIs and T20Is, showcasing adaptability and flair in limited-overs cricket. In recent years, he has matured into a senior player, taking on leadership responsibilities, including serving as vice-captain. His blend of experience, elegant technique, and fighting spirit continues to make him a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s resurgence in international cricket. Recently, Kusal Mendis became the batter with most Ducks in ODI Cricket. 

Kusal Mendis has faced several serious disciplinary issues during his career. In July 2020 he was arrested after his vehicle struck and killed a 64-year-old cyclist in Panadura, Sri Lanka. Subsequently, in July 2021, the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) imposed a one-year international ban (plus six months domestic) and a fine of 10 million Sri Lankan rupees on Mendis (along with two teammates) for breaching the bio-secure bubble during the England tour. More recently, in March 2024 he was penalised with demerit points and a 50% match-fee fine for abusing umpires at the end of an ODI against Bangladesh which is a Level 2 offence under the ICC code. 

Kusal Mendis did not complete his studies as he went to the school until his High School. 

Kusal Mendis has married to Nishelle Fernandez who was his long time girlfriend. Both of them have a daughter together named Hailey. 

Kusal Mendis has a very good physique, he has a height of 5’6 inches and weight of 68 kilograms. 

Kusal Mendis has built an impressive resume as one of Sri Lanka’s most consistent and stylish batsmen of the modern era. Since his international debut in 2015, he has accumulated over 8,000 runs across formats, including multiple centuries in Tests and ODIs. His maiden Test hundred, a match-winning 176 against Australia in 2016, remains one of the defining innings in Sri Lankan cricket history. Mendis has been part of several memorable victories, including Sri Lanka’s historic Test series win in South Africa in 2019, where he played a crucial role with an unbeaten 84 in the epic chase at Durban. He has also registered ODI centuries against top sides such as India and Bangladesh, showcasing his adaptability and temperament. In addition, he has captained Sri Lanka in limited-overs matches, reflecting his evolution into a senior leader. Recognized for his elegant stroke play, tactical intelligence, and ability to perform under pressure, Mendis continues to be regarded as one of Sri Lanka’s most talented and dependable cricketers of his generation.
