Kalpana Chawla

She was born in Karnal, India, on March 17, 1962. Sanjyothi Chawla was her mother, while Banarasi Lal Chawla was her father. Out of the four children, she was the youngest. Until she started school, her parents called her Montu. Chawla chose her own name when she started teaching. The word "Kalpana" suggests "imagination" or "idea." She was frequently referred to as K.C. She loved reading, backpacking, hiking, and flying.

The first Indian-American astronaut and Indian woman in space, Kalpana Chawla, gets high marks for her friendly and affable personality.

In 1988, she began working in the field of powered-lift computational fluid dynamics at NASA Ames Research Center. Her study focused on simulating the intricate airflows that surround aircraft, such as the Harrier in "ground-effect."In 1993, Kalpana Chawla became a Research Scientist and Vice President of Overset Methods Inc. in Los Altos, California, where she joined a group of researchers who focused on simulating shifting numerous body difficulties. Her task was to create and apply effective methods for aerodynamic optimization. The outcomes of her projects have been published in journals and technical conference papers.

In addition to being the first Indian-born woman in space, Kalpana Chawla was a visionary astronaut and aerospace engineer who flew on two space shuttle missions and carried out important scientific research.Chawla became the first South Asian American woman and the first Indian woman to travel to space when she embarked on her first mission on Space Shuttle Columbia's STS-87 on November 19, 1997, following her training.

• She was chosen by NASA in December 1994. As a prospective astronaut in the 15th Group of Astronauts, she reported at the Johnson Space Center in March 1995.
• She became a crew representative for the Astronaut Office EVA/Robotics and Computer Branches after a year of training. Here, she tested software for the space shuttles and worked with robotic situational
  awareness displays.
• The astronauts were slung around as the ship rocked, bucked, and became unstable. Crew members were murdered as the ship depressurized in less than a minute. Before hitting the earth, the spacecraft broke apart over Louisiana and Texas. It was the second significant catastrophe after the Challenger shuttle explosion in 1986.
• All seven were slain in a crew. Rick Husband, Michael Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, Laurel Clark, Ilan Ramon, David Brown, and William McCool were among the crew members.
