He started his political career as an Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) activist in 1983 and later was appointed as its secretary. He got a postgraduate degree in Anthropology from Utkal University in Bhubaneswar. After holding several roles within the BJP, he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 representing Deogarh.
