Early Life
Ashwini Kalsekar grew up in a Marathi family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. Her dad, Anil Kalsekar, worked at a bank. She finished her B.A. in Mumbai and graduated in 1991. After that, she dove into theatre from 1991 to 1994. During 1992 to 1993, she learned from actress Neena Gupta to chase her acting dreams. Additionally, she trained with theatre coach Muzammeel Vakil from 1992 to 1995. On top of that, Ashwini is a trained Kathak dancer.
Career
Shanti marked Ashwini's debut in acting. She later appeared in popular TV shows like CID, Anjaane, Siddhant, and K. Street Pali Hill. In 1996, she took part in the Marathi film Tula Jhapar La, which led to several supporting roles in other Marathi films. Her big break came when Ekta Kapoor cast her as the villain Jigyasa Walia in the soap opera Kasamh Se. This role earned her the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role, the Indian Telly Award for the same category, and several other prestigious awards.
In 2012, Ekta Kapoor reached out to her again for the role of Maham Anga, the foster mother of Emperor Akbar, in the historical drama Jodha Akbar. This performance garnered her critical acclaim and numerous awards, including the Indian Telly Award for Best Actress in a Negative Role and the Boroplus Gold Award for the same. That same year, she joined the Marathi comedy reality show Fu Bai Fu as a judge alongside Swapnil Joshi and Sanjay Jadhav for two seasons. In 2014, Ashwini took on the role of Pam Khanna in Ekta Kapoor's soap opera Itna Karo Na Mujhe Pyaar.
